Mind VS Awareness
Today I made a huge breakthrough in my awareness and perception of who and what I ‘am.’ Over a period of months I’ve been reading books on philosophy and metaphysics with some religious undertones. Don’t get me wrong here…I am not a super-religious person, though I do believe in a Creator (Supreme Being) of all things and attend church on a somewhat irregular basis. This is not a discussion of religion per say…however, I cannot (and don’t desire to) prevent my beliefs from coming through. So if this offends you, just know it is your issue not mine. With this disclaimer stated, I continue…
What I found in all my reading was a common thread…that of Awareness or Perception. If you think about it, most of our day is spent thinking of ourselves in a certain way. Things we were told by parents, teachers, peers and even strangers permeate our thinking – often to the point where it prevents or stops us from taking action on the ideas and things we desire to do or have. Such as…apply for a new job or higher position, start a business or take it in a new direction, fulfill a dream or create art. After awhile we are so used to thinking of ourselves in this way – with this convoluted perception of our Self, we believe this is who we really are. But this is not the TRUTH of who we are!
Today I became ‘aware’ of who I truly am!!
I have always thought of myself as looking a certain way…but when I look in the mirror, I am surprised to see a completely different image…older, shorter, heavier! But I don’t ‘feel’ like what I see…my perception of my Self is much different than what I acually “see.” Our awareness of our Self is the truth of who and what we are – what we ‘see’ is really an illusion created from all the things we were told when we were young and we have come to accept as truth.
When embarking on making changes in and to one’s life, it is important to focus only the the TRUTH of who we are…not on what we see in the mirror, on a scale or anyone else’s measurement of our Self. Focusing our thoughts and feelings on this true image – whether it is slimmer, smarter or younger – then manifests itself!
For example – when I was young, I was considered overweight according to some chart showing what I ‘should’ weigh or be. Being told this throughout my childhood carried through to the point where even when I became very thin, all I could see in the mirror was a ‘fat’ person. Was this the ‘Truth’ of how I looked? NO! But I still saw myself based on all I had been told as a child.
Having now overcome those ideas of who I appear to be, I perceive a completely different image in my mind. When I exercise, I now do it from the image and perspective of a slim, healthy, strong and fit person who easily maintains the image of who I truly am. Therefore, my thoughts and feelings of who I am have manifested to become my Truth!
This ‘awerness’ of Self then carries through to changing our beliefs in our abilities and what we are capable of accomplishing. If in our mind our perception of Self is ‘we are not smart enough, talented enough, strong enough’ then we will never accomplish the goals and dreams we have set for ourselves.
But we CAN change the negative percption we have by choosing to focus on the exact opposite or positive side of the same thought…ie. I am smart, thin, young-looking…and NOT focus or allow our thoughts to continue repeating the negative.
In so doing, we are capable of DOing and BEing anything we dream about and consciously choose for our Self.
Our thought is never “Can I do it” – it is always “Believe you can and DO it!”
