The “Clutter” That Kills Your Spirit!

Most people are familiar with Alzheimer’s disease.

You may know someone with Alzheimer’s.  And nowadays many people have a family member afflicted with Alzheimer’s.

Unfortunately, I have  personal knowledge… my aunt was a fiercely independent, smart woman for 70+ years of her life.  But now she is confined to a nursing home.  Yes, confined…so she cannot leave and get lost or hurt.  She no longer knows who she is…not her name, her family or the financial business that supported her throughout her life.

Now we must empty /clear out her home and give away all her possessions because she doesn’t remember what they are or why they meant so much to her.

As I walked through her home, from room to room, I thought about all the “stuff” we accumulate during our lives.  Things that were important or meant so much at the time, so we tuck them away in a drawer or closet so we can refer to them later – reliving our memories.  As time passed we would look at them less often and eventually forget they were there… unless something triggered our memory or we ran across them by chance.

This is the same thing we do with the lessons and experiences of our life.  We learn things from family, school, and life that are important at the time, so we tuck them away in our memory to refer to when we need them.  And that is often a very good thing.  As kids we must know to look both ways when crossing the street so we don’t get hit by a car.  We learn how to get along with others – maybe biting back our reactions or responses to friends, family or spouses so our feelings are not hurt more than they already have been.  After all, we are really hurt the most by the people we love.

But these memory responses may no longer serve us – in fact, they may actually be hurting us!

that we carry around in our memory - in the recesses of our sub-conscious - that helped us survive at one time may now be holding us back from moving forward and accomplishing our goals now!

Fears about speaking our opinion or offering our knowledge. Doubts about our unique knowledge and abilities that we take for granted, because we “just know it” or “do it easily” so it’s no big deal.  We may think, “Can’t everyone do that?” or “Everyone knows that!”

These are the “Clutter” of our Mind! And all this “Mind Clutter” no longer serves us.  It holds us back and prevents us from accomplishing goals or our Life Purpose.  It is really killing us…Killing our Spirit!

Things like…”I’m not good with money!”…”I could never speak in front of a group or audience!”…”I don’t have enough expertise or knowledge to get that job or ask for a raise, so why bother?”

Do any of these phrases run through your mind when you get an idea, have an opportunity or dream of doing something new?  These are the “self-limiting beliefs” that are killing your Spirit…your Soul!  But the good news is - they can be changed!
